The Daily Mail is reporting that Everton has agreed to a £5 million deal for current River Plate defender Ramiro Mori. The 24-year old defender just finished helping his Argentina club win the Copa Libertadores this season. Though Valencia was thought to have been in the race for the player's signature, it appears that Everton has won out.
At this point personal terms are not rumored to have been completed, nor has a work permit been approved. Assuming this deal is actually complete and these details are taken care of, this will make a strong signing for Everton. Mori just received his first call up to the Argentina national team in March, and acquitted himself well.
Should Mori arrive on Merseyside he would initially slot in as defensive cover for John Stones and Phil Jagielka. Despite the poor performance of Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz last season, they did provide cover, something Everton lacks with Leighton Baines out injured and Brandon Galloway deputizing for him. Mori will give Everton a third CB for the next 6-8 weeks, and a 4th CB when Leighton Baines returns.
The price is also pretty nice. £5 million is a good price for a defender out of Argentina, even though there is risk. With the new tv money sprouting up it makes sense to take some chances on players from unusual areas of the globe. Mori is stands at 6'2" and weighs 163 pounds right now. He'll definitely need to add some muscle to his frame when he moves to England, but the size will help in the aerial friendly EPL. Overall an excellent deal if it does go through.
