UPDATE: Multiple media sources are claiming that Holgate is at Finch Farm currently undergoing a medical (4:30pm BST)
Everton have reportedly won the race for Barnsley defender Mason Holgate, according to the Metro.
The Blues have had a bid of around £1m accepted for the young defender and will now move to discuss personal terms and tie up a deal for his services.
The 18-year-old is one of the highest rated youngsters in the lower leagues and has been coveted by a number of Premier League sides this summer, although a move is yet to materialise.
He has already turned down a move to Manchester United, while Premier League new boys Bournemouth have also been discussing a deal with him after having a similar bid accepted.
It will now be up to the player himself where he ends up, although there is every chance he would look favourably upon a move to Goodison Park given the success story of John Stones, who also signed from Barnsley.
Should he sign, it would be another indication of the path Everton are taking in regards to signing young players to develop for the future, although given the current lack of numbers in defence there is every chance Holgate could have a first team role this season should he join.
In the mean time, Blues fans can at least be pleased that some transfer business seems to be happening, although it isn't the big money move they are hoping for.
