Ragnar Klavan is not a name that many fans, even the hardcore ones, can say they know very well. The unheralded Estonia center-back plays for Augsburg in the Bundesliga, and completed a striking achievement of playing every single minute of the just-ended season for the German side.
At 29, he is by no means a young buck, but has garnered plenty of experience in his playing career which started in 2001 in Estonia. Along the way he has featured in the Dutch Eredivisie for Heracles Almelo and AZ Alkmaar, and then with Augsburg since 2012. He has 17 goals in 341 club appearances in his career, and is a bedrock of the Estonian national side where he has tallied 3 goals in 103 senior caps.
Augsburg were only promoted to the Bundesliga in 2011-12, and this season's fifth-placed finish marked their best ever placing in the top tier of German football. The side have sealed a spot in the group stages of the Europa League, but Klavan's agent notes that his client has always dreamed of playing in the Premier League and would gladly forego the Europa for that.
His agent, Maikel Stevens also commented:
"They (Everton) asked about him and it is normal that you think about such a request, but it is also fact that he is under contract at Augsburg for two more years."
While the 6' 1" defender would bring some height and younger (sort of) legs to the Everton backline, he might take some time settling into the Premier League style of football, especially with his weaknesses.
