Transfer speculation around Everton is continuing to heat up with Manchester United center back Jonny Evans as the latest name said to be joining the Toffees come the summer.
According to reports from Goal Everton are looking to sign Evans for around £10 million as Louis Van Gaal looks to sign Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels once the transfer window opens. Once a regular starter under Alex Ferguson and David Moyes, Evans has struggled to find consistent playing time as Van Gaal has shifted players and formation with regularity.
While it is not surprising that United are looked to off load one of their many center back's, the link with Everton is a curious one. Everton's need for center back depth is well documented as the defense has struggled greatly throughout the season. However, it appears that for the immediate future, Phil Jagielka and John Stones will be the primary defenders for the team. Evans could be a decent option should Jagielka's age catch up to him, but paying £10 million for a back up seems a bit steep, especially for Everton.
Perhaps if the price was lowered, it could be a solid signing, but Jonny Evans does not excite me. While it is true that Everton will need defensive reinforcements with the likely departures of Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz, Evans may not be the best option available and Roberto Martinez should certainly do his diligence before signing the United defender.
What do you think? Should Everton sign Evans? Have your say in the comments!
