The ever reliable Daily Mail claims West Ham are considering a late move to sign Sylvain Distin on a free transfer.
They story, as you would expect, is totally quote-less but perhaps does have some sense behind it. After all Distin is out of contract in the summer and so would be available for pretty much nothing.
West Ham meanwhile are in the midst of a defensive injury crisis and may well be looking for a cheap defender to add to the squad for the second half of the season.
Back at Goodison and Distin has struggled for form and fitness this season. The 37-year-old was also banished from the training ground earlier in the campaign after an apparent fall out with manager Roberto Martinez.
However, it seems unlikely that Everton will sanction a move without a replacement coming in as it would leave them desperately short at the back.
Phil Jagielka, John Stones and Antolin Alcaraz are our only remaining senior central defenders, with youngsters Tyias Browning and Brendan Galloway as back up.
Everton have not been linked with any defenders and Martinez has not said he is looking for one either, so this move appears unlikely unless things change significantly in the next few hours.
