Everton 3-4 Stoke - Sloppy Toffees stunned by late penalty

"A great advert for the Premier League" they will call it, but Everton fans will want to forget a pulsating match at Goodison Park that ended in heartbreak.

Referee Mark Clattenburg once again came back to haunt Everton, making a controversial decision to penalise John Stones for a foul in Arnautovic in the area.

That decision shouldn't mask some more horrific Everton defending though, with all their efforts going forward wasted by poor play at the back.

The first half was all about Xherdan Shaqiri, who was linked with Everton before joining Stoke from Inter Milan for £12m in the summer.

The Swiss midfielder put Stoke ahead on 16 minutes when Bojan's pass found Arnautovic and his first time layoff allowed Shaqiri to slide beyond Tim Howard.

Everton levelled six minutes later when James McCarthy found Lukaku in the area and the Belgian was able to turn and fire past Jack Butland.

McCarthy would not last much longer though, the Ireland midfielder suffered a groin strain and had to be replaced by Tom Cleverley.

The Potters retook the lead a minute before the break in spectacular fashion. Shaqiri running onto Bojan's long pass and clipping a first-time half-volley beyond a stranded Howard into the top corner.

Everton, to their credit, rallied after the break and began to dominate. Roberto Martinez's side finally levelled when Cleverely's long pass was chested down by Lukaku and buried into the far corner.

Everton took the lead for the first time with 19 minutes left when Lukaku found Ross Barkley down the left and his low cross was tapped home by Deulofeu from close range.

Stoke had barely threatened in the second half so Everton looked likely for the win, but their soft underbelly was once again exposed in the closing stages.

With ten minutes left Arnautovic's cross was only parried by Howard into the path of substitute Joselu who fired a first time volley into the corner.

Critics will once again blame Howard for a poor and weak attempt at clearing the ball, but the whole defensive set up was a shambles.

With the game heading towards a draw Stones slid in on Arnautovic and appeared to get a touch on the ball, Clattenburg waited a few moments before deciding to point to the spot, much to Everton's consternation.

Arnautovic picked himself up to bury the penalty and break Everton hearts, the Blues on the opposite end of a last-gasp goal after their win up at Newcastle two days ago.
