Everton fans in final farewell for Howard Kendall

Legendary player, manager and Everton giant Howard Kendall received a rousing round of applause at the four minute mark today during the game between the Blues and Sunderland.

It is poignant that on Remembrance Sunday, when Everton and members of the military marked ceremonies to commemorate those who have lost their lives in service, Toffees worldwide saluted one of their own who had played in the ranks and then came back as a manager to raise this club to glorified heights. The final result on the day was a further tribute to the swashbuckling team that Kendall built in the 1980s that went on to achieve legendary status.

A fan initiative was proposed during the week to bid him a final adieu during today's game for the duration of the fourth minute, a tip of the cap to the number that he wore as an Evertonian in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Kendall was idolized by all those in the Everton community, and well-loved in the greater footballing family. His own family was present at Goodison Park and received flowers on behalf of the club in a halftime ceremony.

The funeral cortege of the late Kendall memorably went  around Goodison Park one last time during his funeral on Thursday, stopping in front of the statue of another great Evertonian Dixie Dean for a round of applause.

The service was marked by numerous members of the Everton and football world, and marked with emotion-laden speeches from players past and present.
