Everton and England midfielder Tom Cleverley and his family were threatened by armed robbers during a burglary attempt on Friday evening. The player is currently recuperating from an ankle ligament injury he sustained playing for the Blues.
Greater Manchester Police are investigating the raid on his mansion by a group of robbers who were reported to have made away with assorted valuables valued at £175,000 ($270,000), including jewelry and two cars. Cleverley, his wife, TV star Georgina Dorsett, and their two-year-old daughter were unharmed but shaken.
An anonymous source told reporters -
"Tom and Georgina weren't physically hurt but it was a horrific ordeal for them - especially as their little girl was with them. The only thing in their minds was protecting her.
"This was a very, very nasty incident and the couple have been shaken beyond belief."
The source added that the couple appeared to have been targeted 'due to their wealth' and that his wife was 'properly spooked' by the incident.
Cleverley and Dorsett - who formerly starred on The Only Way Is Essex - were married earlier this summer at a glitzy ceremony in Mayfair, London, with his former Manchester United teammates Wayne Rooney, Chris Smalling and Danny Welbeck among the guests. The wedding happened within a fortnight of his free transfer to Everton being finalized.
