Romelu Lukaku's agent has made waves by claiming that Everton manager Roberto Martinez would sell the striker for a fair price.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Lukaku's agent, Mino Raiola, told a French radio station that the Belgian may be allowed to leave Merseyside as soon as January. Over the weekend, rumors of a potential 40 million pound sale to PSG surfaced, so Raiola's comments will serve only to intensify speculation.

Raiola made the following comments:

Lukaku to PSG? We had a discussion with Martinez, he said he would let him leave Everton if a good offer comes in. But talking about the transfer window now makes no sense.

Someone ought to tell Raiola that commenting on a potential transfer move in one sentence, then saying that talking about the transfer window now makes no sense, does indeed makes no sense.

Raiola also represents Paul Pogba, Mario Balotelli, and PSG players Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Blaise Matuidi, Gregory van der Wiel, and Maxwell.

While Raiola has made somewhat derogatory comments about Everton in the past, there is always a danger in reading too much into comments that have been translated from another language into English. So, these comments, as always, should be taken with a grain of salt.

Lukaku, who has five Premier League and two League Cup goals this season, came to the Toffees from Chelsea for 28 million pounds, so a 40 million pound sale would see the club make a 12 million pound profit.

But, Roberto Martinez and Everton have no players on the roster capable of filling the hole that would be left by a departing Lukaku, and top strikers are hard to come by in the transfer market, even if the club has 40 million pounds to spend.

The big Belgian has come under scrutiny at times this season, but only four players have more Premier League goals than him this season, and he has 47 Premier League goals since the start of the 2012-13 season.

The club sent a big message over the summer by refusing to sell John Stones to Chelsea, so it seems unlikely that Martinez would be pressured by the board to sell Lukaku in January. If I was in Martinez shoes, I would not have any interest in selling Lukaku unless the sum was substantially more than 40 million pounds.
