Premier League trio eyeing Everton’s James McCarthy

Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are being linked with a January move for the midfielder.

The Daily Star is reporting that Everton midfielder James McCarthy could be a January target for Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

The 23 year old is yet to sign a new contract at Goodison Park, despite every indication from the club that they are willing to offer him a new deal as soon as possible.

According to the newspaper, McCarthy was promised improved contract terms based on performances, with the midfielder believing he has reached the targets that were set for him by Roberto Martinez. He is said to be surprised at the lack of movement so far, having expected to start talks already.

This has led to speculation that the Irishman may become a transfer target for several Premier League clubs, with Manchester United linked with a move in several rumours over the summer transfer window.

Tottenham were linked with a move for the former Wigan man before his move to Goodison Park last year, and new manager  Mauricio Pochettino is on the hunt for a central midfield player, as evidenced by his pursuit of Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.

Everton are likely to be in a position to ask for more than the £13m they paid for the Republic of Ireland man should an offer appear in January, although that is unlikely given his importance to Martinez's system and style of play.
