Belgian Striker Injured In World Cup Friendly

Jan Kruger

Despite starting on the bench in Belgium's final World Cup friendly, Romelu Lukaku limped off the field injured with what is being called a severe ankle sprain. The Belgian forward is expected to miss 3-4 days according to Belgium coach Marc Wilmots. Should the injury take longer to heal, it is possible the Chelsea player could miss the first game in Brazil for Belgium.

The injury could be a big blow to a Belgium side that is already missing Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke. The Belgians open play against Algeria followed by games against Russia and South Korea. All winnable fixtures, but also losable without a solid strike force.

Recent rumors have said that Everton has opened negtiations with Chelsea over a permanent transfer for the striker. During his year long loan spell he scored 15 goals in 31 matches, one of the best performances by an Everton forward since Yakubu in 2007. Hopefully this injury isn't any worse than stated and Lukaku can show of his great Everton form in Brazil.
