Everton are rumored to be eyeing Marseille midfielder Andre Ayew as he may look to move away from the Ligue 1 club. Liverpool Echo and The Mirror are both reporting that Everton has joined their Merseyside rival Liverpool in the race for Ayew's signature this summer.
Ayew's current deal is set to run out this summer and is eligible to sign a pre-contract in January meaning the hunt for his signature could heat up as the season progresses. Swansea, Hull City and West Ham are reported to be interested in Ayew as well.
Ayew featured heavily for Ghana during the 2014 World Cup, netting two goals in the Group Stage, including a clinical finish against USA and Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard.
Wing play has been an issue for Everton this season with Aiden McGeady and Christian Atsu failing to impose themselves and Kevin Mirallas suffering from a lingering hamstring issue. Ayew could prove to be an upgrade on the left side, especially with Steven Pienaar on the wrong side of 30. Additionally, if the Toffees can pick up Ayew on a free transfer, it would be yet another smart and affordable move by Roberto Martinez.
Having an African footballing legend like Samuel Eto'o on the roster certainly can't hurt Everton's chances. Ayew seems to look up to Eto'o and may relish in the opportunity to team up with the Everton striker. Eto'o has already recieved praise from Romelu Lukaku for his mentoring qualities and Ayew could benefit from from the Cameroonian as well.
Securing a spot in European competition next season should be paramount if Everton wish to sign Ayew. Marseille narrowly missed out on the Europa League last season but look poised to return as they currently sit atop the Ligue 1 standings. And with Liverpool struggling to match last season's form, the Toffees may just be able to convince Ayew to set up shop at Goodison instead of Anfield.
