Everton manager Roberto Martinez has announced that he will not pursue a defender in the January transfer window, according to a report in the Daily Star.
The Blues started the 2014-15 season by giving up ten goals in three games in the month of August, then gave up six in two games to Crystal Palace and Swansea City in September. Since then, the team has managed to put some of the defensive problems behind them, only giving up one goal in the past three matches.
Everton lost John Stones to an ankle injury until the beginning of 2015, and have been without Sylvain Distin at times. Despite the fact that some of his first-choice defenders have been or remain unavailable, Martinez says that he will not look for new options:
"We won't sign a defender, as you can see we have been performing well at the back and centre half position is a position we are strong in. We are just making sure we get John fully fit and ready in the new year."
Everton look like a team that have turned a corner from a shaky start to the season. If they want to continue with their recent success, they will have to do it without any new faces in the defensive lineup.
