So, another week, another win - albeit a bitty, inconsistent and frequently frustrating one. Everton's 3-1 victory away at Burnley gave the Blues back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time this season, and though there were several nervous moments during a pretty poor second half (I'm sure I wasn't the only one having flashbacks to Leicester away on the opening day), they deserved the result.
Roberto Martinez's weird sort of 4-3-3, with Steven Naismith, Romelu Lukaku and Samuel Eto'o up top, led to some enjoyable interplay going forward, but the lack of proper wingers left the flanks worryingly exposed at times. Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman were frequently doubled up on, and had the standard of Burnley's crossing been a bit better then the Blues may well have been behind at half time.
But as it was, the crossing was poor, and the Toffees led at the break. This Everton team, whatever its faults, does score goals, and the three they bagged today were all excellent. Eto'o's early opener was a thing of beauty, featuring 12 passes, nine Everton players and a magnificent header from the Cameroonian. Lukaku's bobbly finish before the break came after a lovely series of passes between the attacking trio, and the clincher was spectacular, with Barkley (who still needs to iron out his first touch) and Pienaar combining before the man of the match Eto'o turned and applied a delicious finish.
It was an interesting day for Rom, who scored the winner but also gifted Burnley their equaliser with a clumsy back pass. A lot of people during the game were quick to jump on the striker's back (before he dug out his goal), but while it's true that his control and passing leave a lot to be desired, he continues to score, even while not playing particularly well. Whether goals justify otherwise iffy performances is an interesting question, but for now let's at least be happy that our record signing is hitting the back of the net before he's hit top form.
Meanwhile, the canny signing of Eto'o continues to pay dividends. The veteran netted his third and fourth Everton goals at Turf Moor, and only the inside of the post denied him a deserved late hattrick. While Lukaku's performances continue to veer wildly between calamitous and formidable, Eto'o looks to be the Toffees' most consistent striker at present. Let's hope some of the old man's magic rubs off on Rom over the coming weeks.
