Roma Interested In Toffees Defender

Scott Heavey

Serie A giant Roma could be making a move for Everton defender John Heitinga. The Dutch football site Football Oranje is reporting that Roma wants to make a quick deal for the out of favor defender.

If Roma defender Nicholas Burdisso departs the club, the belief is that Roma will want to bring in Heitinga as a replacement.

The past 18 months have seen a decline in Heitinga's form and playing time. The 2012-2013 season was made up of a lot of appearances at central midfield despite Heitinga's preference for playing center back. This year the Dutch International had to wait until 2014 to make his first EPL appearance for the club.

This lack of playing time has led to rumors swirling around Everton in recent weeks. Heitinga is apparently keen to find some regular playing time to secure his spot in Brazil for the 2014 World Cup. Though Heitinga is likely to be selected even if he stays at Everton, more playing time would guarentee his spot in Louis van Gaal's roster.

Already a proposed move to West Ham fell through, and rumors of a move to Fulham or a return to the Dutch League never materialized. Other rumors have included Hetinga moving to Stoke City and Currently Roma sit 2nd in Serie A, 8 points adrift of league leaders Juventus
