Everton Bid Rejected for McCarthy

Chris Brunskill

In yet another indication that Marouane Fellaini might be on his way out, Wigan has a rejected a bid for prize midfielder James McCarthy according to reports from Sky News and the Telegraph. The bid is believed to be in the neighborhood of £10 million, and is thought to be as a replacement for Fellaini.

Wigan are believed to be looking for a sum around £12 - £13 million although it is possible the club will hold out for an exorbitant sum. McCarthy is only 22 and has been capped at the senior level for the Republic of Ireland. He spent the past season becoming a dominant force for Wigan in the midfield.

Everton's pursuit of the Irish international has generated some controversy amongst fans. No one has denied his talent, but the price seems steep for Everton considering how few players have gone for any some over £10 million and their most expensive signing being Fellaini at £15 million.

If Everton is unable to secure McCarthy's services it will be interesting to see what happens to Fellaini. Several reports have said that Martinez will not allow Fellaini to leave if Everton is unable to secure a proper replacement by the end of the window.
