The Guardian are reporting that Everton have made an enquiry about Ajax central defender Toby Alderweireld. According to the player's agent, the Toffees have been looking into the possibility of adding the Belgian international defender along with sending new chief scout Kevin Reeves to watch Alderweireld at last weekend Dutch Super Cup match.
Alderweireld's agent Soren Lerby had this to say about the possible move:
"It is true that Everton came forward for Alderweireld. Though there are other concrete directions, Toby must now look at which team he finds the most challenging."
The 24-year-old defender has also garnered interested from Liverpool and reportedly rejected a move to Norwich City last month. Given the success that various Belgian teammates like Marouane Fellaini and Kevin Mirallas have had as Everton, it makes sense that the club might have both interest and a good shot at landing Alderweireld. The Belgian is in the final year of his contract with Ajax.
Of course, it's all speculation at this point, but sensible speculation.
Antolín Alcaraz is still having some injury problems and John Heitinga's future with the club is still up in the air. Plus Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin aren't getting any younger.
Certainly something to watch and a potentially positive signing if Roberto Martinez can pull it off.
