Everton close in on Leroy Fer deal

Everton have pulled a massive rabbit out of the transfer window hat by closing in on a deal for FC Twente midfielder Leroy Fer.

Things have been desperately quiet on the transfer front of late, with David Moyes repeatedly stressing that funds are tight.

The need to strengthen, however, is obvious, with the small squad showing signs of fatigue in recent weeks.

Moyes hinted at the weekend that he would be trying to bring in new faces in the final few days of the transfer window - even saying that if he was a betting man he would back himself to do some deals before the 31st.

Well, out of nowhere on Monday afternoon, it emerged that Everton are closing on a deal to sign 22-year-old Fer, with Sky Sports News saying the transfer should be complete within 24 hours.

This prompts a couple of immediate questions: 1) Who is this guy and 2) where the hell is the money coming from?

Well in answer to the first question I consulted good old Wikipedia to find out that he is a full Netherlands international, who began his career at Feyenoord before moving to Twente in 2011 (we will have a bigger profile of him soon, provided the move goes through).

He played in a number of positions in his earlier career before settling as a defensive midfielder - though knowing David Moyes I expect Fer to be versatile and able to fill in a number of positions.

It look like he could be the man to add steel and drive to the midfield, allowing Marouane Fellaini to push further forward and Phil Neville sit on the bench.

The cash? Well, Sky Sports News again report that NO player will be leaving to fund the deal, certainly among key first-teamers like Fellaini or Leighton Baines.

I also imagine the deal will involve several installments, with the upcoming bumper TV deal a likely factor in the move.

The news is a timely boost for Everton at a key moment of the season. We all remember what the arrival of Darron Gibson and Nikica Jelavic did for the side last January. So if this deal is completed it should give the players a lift heading into a vital period of the campaign.

*Update: Everton have confirmed a deal has been agreed to sign Fer, with the player set to head over to Goodison Park for a medical.
