It should have been the precursor to something great, something fantastic, rather than the peak of our season. However, it cannot be denied that Everton's 2-0 win up at Sunderland in the FA Cup sixth round replay was one of the performances of the campaign.
Most of us thought the Blues had blown their chance after staggering to a 1-1 in the first game, failing to break down a stubborn Sunderland rearguard that played for the replay almost as soon as they had taken the lead in the first ten minutes (see Chelsea in the Champions League and England at Euro 2012!).
But with Liverpool waiting at Wembley in the semi-final it was vital we made it through, and the supporters travelled in great number up to the north-east. A masterstroke by the club was to lay on free buses, ensuring a huge army of traveling Evertonians would be able to cheer on the Toffees at the Stadium of Light.
The game was a tense one, but looking back afterwards Everton were never really in any danger. David Moyes had that glare in his eyes that night, one that showed a fierce will to win. Marouane Fellaini was imperious in midfield, Heitinga and Distin solid at the back, while upfront we had a new goalscoring hero.
Nikica 'I only need one touch' Jelavic is quickly becoming a legend at Goodison Park. He demonstrated why in this match, his smart first-time finish from Gueye's low cross giving Everton a vital lead midway through the first half.
Not long after the break he had a heavy role in the second, though it was also rank bad play by David Vaughan - with hilarious results.
It wasn't just the goals and the score that made this my highlight, it was the atmosphere among the fans and the bond between them and the players. There was a real collective will to make it to Wembley, and the celebrations at the end showed how much it meant to everybody.
But as I said at the start, it is just such a shame that the journey ended there rather than in the final.
So that was my pick, but what was your highlight of the 2011/12 season? Favourite game? Favourite goal? Or even just a favourite, memorable moment?
