International Evertonians

Although the most major soccer leagues are now off for the summer, this weekend provides soccer fans to get their fix with some high profile international friendlies, and some all important Euro 2012 qualifiers. Several Blues are in action, and we have everything you need to keep track of your favorite players as they attempt to perform on the international stage.

On Thursday Nigeria played an Argentina B-team in a game the Super Eagles won 4-1. It was their first victory over the Argentinians at a senior level, and both Victor Anichebe and Joseph Yobo took part in the contest. Yobo captained the squad in this friendly, and Anichebe started the game but was removed at half time after scoring yet another goal for Nigeria. It would be nice if he could do the same thing while wearing Everton blue. Thankfully Yakubu was not part of the squad, otherwise the Super Eagles would have been more likely to lose after missing several sitters. Next up for the Super Eagles is an African Nations Cup qualifier against Ethiopia on Sunday. The team currently sits in second place of their qualifying group after the first 3 of 6 qualifying matches, and will look to grab all 3 points to enhance their chances of qualification.

Across the Atlantic, goalkeeper Tim Howard is set to start in goal for the USA in their Saturday friendly against currently world champions Spain. The American squad is preparing for their regional tournament the Gold Cup, and gaffer Bob Bradley has once again decided to play a warm up involve an extremely strong squad. The last time these two teams met was in 2009 at the Confederations Cup where the US won 2-0 in a truly stunning match. Howard will have to be at his best once again if the US has any chance of repeating the upset.

Back in England, both Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines were named by Capello in the squad that will take on Switzerland on Saturday. Jagielka may have a chance to start in the center of the defense, and if he doesn't start will certainly be an option of the bench. For Leighton Baines, he is unlikely to see any playing time unless Capello is actually willing to play people based on recent form. It is much more likely that Ashley Cole will get the nod on the left side.
