James McCarthy is reportedly close to agreeing new terms at Goodison Park.

Reports are suggesting that Everton are close to agreeing a new contract with James McCarthy.

The Blues have been putting the finishing touches to deal which would reward the Republic of Ireland midfielder with a major pay boost.

McCarthy, 23, arrived at the club from Wigan Athletic for £13million on deadline day last season to mixed reviews. However, consistent performances and an effective partnership with Gareth Barry meant he soon became integral to Martinez's new style at Goodison Park.

Of such an impressive standard were the youngsters performances last season, he topped our polls here at RoyalBlueMersey, with a massive 83% rating his season as an A and 48% voting him as our young player of the year, ahead of Barkley and Stones.

Everton's board recently handed Roberto Martinez a new deal, and reportedly want to underline their faith in the Spaniard by handing young stars such as McCarthy and John Stones improved and long-term deals, with the deal for McCarthy set to be approved when he returns for pre-season training.
