Marouane Fellaini sold to Manchester United

Jan Kruger

It took forever but in the final minutes of the transfer window, Everton and Manchester United agreed to a deal for the Belgian midfielder.

It has been hinted at for years and rumored for months, Marouane Fellaini has finally made the move from Goodison Park as Manchester United put up the cash for the Belgian star.

United finally met Everton's asking price and the apparent 27.5 million price tag means the Toffees will be well compensated for a player that broke their transfer fee record at 15 million quid. It is a tidy piece of business and after some of Fellaini's comments over the past few years as well as his performance during the spring it is not an awful loss.

Fellaini's time at Everton will be marked by two different persona's. On one hand Evertonians saw a human wrecking ball who had no issues getting stuck into a tackle or shielding the defense from marauding midfielders. The other side to that coin is a player who at times seemed disinterested in playing soccer. It would be interesting how the past season would have turned out had Fellaini not taken a nap once the New Year arrived.

As for Fellaini's replacement, the truth is there is no one quite like him. The departure of Fellaini is a moment when we will slowly see Everton change their style of play in the midfield. Gone is the physical disruption in the attacking third Everton brings. Instead Martinez will have to hurry along his plan to implement a more possession based attack, with the arrival of James McCarthy another shove in that direction.
