Gareth Barry joins Everton on loan from Manchester City

Mike Hewitt

Just when it appeared this deal was dead, Gareth Barry showed up at Finch Farm in the final hour of the transfer window and completed a loan deal with the Toffees

After hours of no word at all about a deal, Everton has brought in Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry on a season long loan in the final minutes of the transfer window.

The English international is making the move to help keep his bid for the 2014 World Cup alive after his playing time appears set to substantially decrease this season. Manchester City has brought in a surplus of talent during the transfer window leaving the former Villa man on the outside.

It will be interesting to see how Barry fits into the Everton squad. A 32-year old does not seem to be a likely fit in Everton's squad, but with Darron Gibson frequently injured he could prove to be a better replacement than Leon Osman. His time in the center of the pitch has been marked by a workman like performance rather anything spectacular.

The transfer is sure to leave most Evertonians a little perplexed. While loan deals can be good moves for younger players, it is a little odd to see a player like Barry coming into the club, especially with his wages. Though Everton negotiated to reduce the wages they would be paying Barry, it still seems like a pointless move.
