Everton defender Sylvain Distin signs new one-year deal

Everton have confirmed that Sylvain Distin has signed a new one-year contract at the club taking him through to the summer of 2014.

The Frenchman’s original deal expired in the summer and he could have signed a pre-contract agreement with another club during the January transfer window.

Premier League rivals QPR were also linked with an immediate move for the 35-year-old, who joined the Blues from Portsmouth for a fee of £5million in the summer of 2009.

Despite his advancing years Distin has maintained his form in a royal blue shirt, forming a solid defensive partnership with Phil Jagielka, who also signed a new contract earlier this month.

News of the deal again highlights boss David Moyes’ desire to ensure the core of his side is tied down to contracts, with Seamus Coleman another to commit to the club in recent weeks and Leon Osman set to be awarded a new three-year deal in near future.

Club captain Phil Neville is another whose contract expires at the end of the season, but I wouldn't be surprised if talks were afoot over a new contract - provided he wants to continue playing.

Doubts still remain though over the future of Jonny Heitinga. The Dutchman has been linked with a move to Ajax in January and is seen by many as the one ‘disposable’ asset the club has left, giving Moyes funds to then spend on numerous players elsewhere – like Diniyar Bilyaletdinov’s sale last January.

However, recent reports suggest Heitinga may now stay, putting on hold any deals Moyes may have hoped to have completed in the next few days.
