Everton to play Bolton away in FA Cup fourth round

Bolton boss Dougie Freedman - Tom Shaw

Everton will travel to the Reebok Stadium to play Bolton in the fourth round of the FA Cup on January 26 after the Trotters defeated Sunderland in their third round replay on Tuesday.

The two clubs drew 2-2 on third round day earlier this month to force a second game at the Stadium of Light, the ground where Everton won a sixth round replay 2-0 last March.

Marvin Sordell's brace secured the Championship side's passage into the fourth round, meaning a short trip to Lancashire for the travelling Everton fans.

Though Bolton v Everton has been a regular fixture in recent seasons prior to the Trotters' relegation in May, this will be the first cup meeting between the sides for 19 years.

Back in 1994,with Mike Walker in the dugout, Paul Rideout's first half goal secured a 1-1 draw at Bolton's old Burden Park ground in the third round.

Everton looked set for a place in round four when Stuart Barlow put them two ahead in the replay at Goodison (this writer's first ever match in the Gwladys Street end!). However, on a chilly January night on Merseyside, Bolton hit back to force extra time - future Toffee Alan Stubbs grabbing one of the goals.

Scotland striker Owen Coyle - a future Bolton manager - then grabbed the winner in extra time to send the visitors through.

That loss continued a poor cup record against four-time FA Cup winners, with Everton succumbing to their Lancashire neighbours in their previous two meetings in 1953 and 1935.

You have to go all the way back to 1908 for Everton's last FA Cup victory over Bolton, meaning it is about time we enjoyed another!
