About us

Royal Blue Mersey began in April 2010 when SBNation approached editor Tom Mallows about adding an Everton blog to their ever-increasing roster of EPL fan blogs.

Tom chose the name of the site - representative of the river Mersey that runs through the City of Liverpool, the colours of Everton strip as well as the well known song sung from the terraces "....on the banks of the Royal Blue Mersey" - and began posting in May 2010.

Since qualifying as a journalist in 2008 I have been freelancing for a number of sports websites. I was asked to manage RBM by the wonderful guys at SBNation in April 2010, an opportunity I couldn't refuse as it combined my two passions: Sports writing and the wonderfully unpredictable world of Everton FC. I was never given a choice as a child - it was Everton or nothing. And ever since my first trip to Goodison in 1993 I have been hooked. Since then I have seen us battle relegation, sit in mid-table, compete for Europe, win a cup final, lose a cup final, win 5-0 and lose 5-0. The Toffees can both infuriate and entertain in equal measure - and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Back in 2005 the first game I ever saw of the EPL was Everton v. Manchester United that April. You all know the game best from when the legend Duncan put his head onto a free kick to effectively seal up a Champions League berth. Needless to say I was hooked from that moment on, and although it hasn't been pretty, it sure has been exciting ever since then. I start writing about everton in November of 2010, and in January of 2011 I joined Everton Offside, which merged with SB Nation in June 2011 after the SB Nation purchased the Offside network. COYB!

I moved around a lot when I was younger so I have an odd selection of teams that I liked, but they are all technically my "hometown" teams. I am a big Australia fan, and my favorite player is Tim Cahill. I've been an Everton fan for quite a while, but I only really started following them closely after Tim Cahill transferred there in 2004. It's also been much easier to follow them recently with much more information and news crossing the Atlantic nowadays. All the teams I like tend to suck, so I have quite the pessimistic view usually. I try to write about sports in order to spread this pessimism among others.

Born, not manufactured an Evertonian since 1982, I attended my first game at the age of two. I go to every home game with a season ticket in the Paddock and also every away match too. I played football at a national level during my college years and went on to trial with a few clubs, notably Wigan Athletic. After being released I decided coaching was the way forward and quickly gained my Level 1 and Level 2 FA Certificates in Coaching Football. Currently, I hold the UEFA B Licence and manage a local district elite football team and have just guided them to league and cup double to uphold my record of winning a trophy every season I have managed. I also scout for the Everton Youth Academy and have experience of coaching at Everton and Chester City FC. Away from football I am a tutor at a training provider. Everton is my religion, Goodison Park is my church, going the match is my pilgrimage. You either understand or you don’t. If you don’t, you don’t matter.

As a Yank, it has always been pretty hard for me to access the Premier League, until recently, so my affiliation with Everton Football Club is just a few years old. But all my life, I have been an adamant fan of the US National Team, and after the 2006 World Cup I decided I wanted to get heavily into the Premier League. I tried out all the biggest clubs, and I had watched a few Everton highlights before to watch Tim Howard play, but in September, 2006, I sat down to watch the Liverpool derby with a friend who supported Liverpool. Within minutes I had chosen my team. The fight in the Everton side was unlike anything I had seen, and they grew on me unlike any other team I had previously attempted to follow. After an emphatic 3-0 victory, I knew they were my team. As I dug further into the history of the club, I was hooked and never looked back. Nothing has brought me more joy, sorrow, or frustration than this football club, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Evertonian since 1994, I was brought up by an Everton loving father and Man United supporting mother, but wisely decided to back the Blues. Since I was 6 me and my dad, along with my step-mum, have had season tickets in the Upper Bullens. I couldn't describe to you the passion and love I have both for Everton but for writing about the blues and Football in general.
I go by a couple of different quotes and they are: 'Nobody is perfect, but supporting Everton is the closest you will get' and 'Supporting Everton is hard, but I wouldn't want it any other way. Tweet me @Gazza2288.
