While late Friday nights sometimes make getting up early enough to go out Saturday morning a bit tricky, there's nothing like watching European soccer, especially Everton, at a bar. The last couple seasons I have watched most Everton matches either on subpar standard definition Fox Soccer Channel or streamed the games online, but occasionally I'll get to watch them on glorious ESPN HD in my living room, or, even better, from a local bar.
I'm from the Philadelphia area, but I moved to Pittsburgh two years ago for school. In the Philadelphia area, Iron Abbey in Horsham is a great place to watch EPL matches. They open whenever the first game starts, have a large beer selection and decent food. The only problem is, that generally no more than two TV's (and often only one TV) is visible from a given vantage point. This means while you're watching, say Everton-Spurs, the group on the other side of the bar is going crazy over the goal just scored in the Man City-Liverpool match that you had no way of seeing.
This season I plan on going to Piper's Pub on Pittsburgh's South Side for a few Everton matches, including their first match next week against Blackburn since it's on Fox Soccer Plus and Comcast has decided we don't deserve this channel even if we pay for the sports and entertainment package. I've never been to Piper's for an EPL match, but its the premier soccer bar in Pittsburgh and was packed for both the England-Germany World Cup game and the World Cup final. They have a decent beer selection, an amazing scotch selection and a menu straight from the British Isles.
So where do YOU watch or plan on watching Everton (or soccer in general)? What are the best soccer bars in your area to see a match? Are there any bars in the US with a strong Everton following? Just one more week of waiting!
